What to Expect at Your Child’s First Therapy Visit

Booking that first visit can feel like a big step. Many parents tell us they were nervous, and that it turned out to be much easier than they expected. Here’s what to expect and how to prepare.

What happens at the screening

Our screening is relaxed and play-based. You’ll tell us what you’ve noticed and what worries you, and we’ll spend time playing with your child. We’ll let you know honestly whether an evaluation or therapy would help, with no pressure and no commitment.

How to prepare your child

  • Keep it simple and positive: “We’re going to a place to play with new toys and friends.”
  • Skip words like “test” or “doctor”
  • Bring a favorite small toy, comfort item or snack if it helps
  • Plan the visit for a time of day when your child is usually rested and happy

What to bring and share

  • A few notes about your concerns and when you first noticed them
  • Any recent reports from your pediatrician, daycare or school, if you have them
  • Short phone videos of your child talking, playing or eating at home, if they’re helpful
  • Your questions, no matter how small

What if my child is shy?

That’s completely normal. We follow your child’s lead, start with what they enjoy and let them warm up at their own pace. Some children are chatty right away and some take a while, and both are okay.

What happens next

If a next step makes sense, we’ll explain it in plain language, whether that’s an evaluation, a personalized plan, a few ideas to try at home or simply checking back in a few months. You’ll always know what we’re thinking and why.

Ready to take the first step? Book a screening and we’ll take it from there.
